The Congress of Neurological Surgeons Marks a Pivotal Year in 2023
Schaumburg, Ill., February 1, 2024—The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) proudly highlights our 2023 Year in Review including new CNS products, courses, milestones, and achievements made possible with the support of our members and volunteers.
In a remarkable achievement, CNS membership has surpassed 11,000 members. The CNS has expanded its educational offerings through diverse learning platforms, demonstrating a commitment to continuous growth and excellence.
The CNS now provides its members with opportunities to enhance their neurosurgical knowledge through nine virtual and in-person courses, four podcast series, three YouTube series, and topic-specific webinars throughout the year. In 2024, the CNS is eager to continue this initiative, offering one-of-a-kind course experiences and ensuring that our education aligns with the time demands of busy neurosurgeon schedules.
In June 2023, the CNS Flashcards were released featuring 500 cards across ten topics. These cards are available for purchase and access through the CNS+ App and are designed to assist residents in quickly reviewing facts as they prepare for their primary exam.
Additionally, in August 2023, the CNS introduced a new Nexus Oral Board case template. We encourage you to consider submitting case content for this innovative section of Nexus, scheduled for publication and release in the fall of 2024.Top of Form
The CNS Annual Meeting marked a historic milestone with record-breaking attendance in Washington, D.C., in September. The meeting received an unprecedented 3,434 abstract submissions providing more scientific content than ever before. Attendees enjoyed many inspiring speakers, and the meeting kicked off with the Opening Scientific Session, followed by a stunning Opening Reception at the Marriott Marquis DC. The first-ever CNS 5K was introduced, inviting attendees to integrate fitness into their overall meeting experience.
The Neurosurgery Publications leadership and staff worked hard to deliver the high-quality science and research readers have come to expect. In 2023, Neurosurgery, Operative Neurosurgery, and Neurosurgery Practice continued to receive an incredibly healthy volume of submissions from a wide, international author base. Regular readers of the journal will have noticed several new features including the “Operative Neurosurgery Technical Lessons Video Series” and the “Neurosurgery Practice with Code” article types. Operative Neurosurgery published its last print issue in December 2023 and is now fully online-only. As a digital-heavy journal comprised of a significant volume of online-only articles and content, we saw this transition as a natural evolution and one that would have a positive impact on the environment by utilizing fewer resources than those needed to produce a print journal. Though online only Operative Neurosurgery remains a subscription-based journal and as such a key member benefit.
The CNS Foundation reached an impressive milestone, featuring 30 new awards including more than $700,000 in donations to neurosurgeons around the world. These awards were made possible by the many CNS Foundation donors. Prepare for an exciting announcement in 2024 as we unveil new observerships and fellowships.
Remarkably, a total of 68 companies supported CNS programs and products in 2023, representing more than a 38% increase over the prior year. We continue to be both proud and grateful for the collaboration with companies in the field. Our partnerships allow the CNS to provide products and solutions that help achieve our mission of enhancing health and improving lives through innovative neurosurgical education, advancement of clinical practice, and scientific exchange.
