Schaumburg, Ill., June 7, 2022—The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) is pleased to announce this year’s CNS Guidelines Quality Scholarship recipient is Dr. Faith Robertson, who is in her third year of residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. The topic of Dr. Robertson’s project is “Evidence- and Value-Based Guidelines for Reversal of Antithrombotics in Intracranial Hemorrhage”.
This scholarship impacts clinical practice guidelines which are highly influential on clinical practice and patient outcomes and relevant to neurosurgical training programs. Several studies show the overall efficacy of the use and adherences to guidelines. However, specific to neurosurgery, there is a need for more in-depth analysis of not only guideline adherence but impact of guidelines on patient outcomes. This grant program provides valuable training for the award recipient and contributes to the growing data demonstrating how CNS Guidelines inform practitioners, policy makers and insurance groups on new treatments that are proven effective.
This year’s Scholarship will run through the academic year July 2022-June 2023, and the final work will be submitted for presentation at the 2023 CNS Annual Meeting, including submission of a manuscript based on this work to Neurosurgery.
Dr. Robertson states, “Almost daily, neurosurgeons face challenges in balancing risks and benefits of antiplatelet and anticoagulation agents for our patients. As new therapies and reversal agents have recently emerged, we must reexamine treatment reversal guidelines - incorporating data on efficacy, effectiveness, access, and cost. I am excited for this opportunity from the CNS and the CNS Foundation, and I hope to combine an evidence-based medicine approach with complimentary frameworks I’ll be studying at Harvard Business School to provide value-based care recommendations as well.”
