Description
The chronic subdural hematoma is one of the most common diseases treated in neurosurgery. For decades, the mainstay of treatment has been surgical evacuation including burr holes, craniotomy, or SEPS evacuation, but this treatment strategy is limited by high recurrence rates and challenges performing neurosurgery on this patient population often on anticoagulation or with numerous comorbidities. Recently, MMA embolization has gained traction as an alternative treatment option with preliminary data and multiple industry-sponsored clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of the procedure.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of a cSDH
- Describe evidence-based options for maximal SDH expansion or recurrence prevention
- Describe ongoing clinical trials evaluating MMA embolization for the treatment of cSDH
